Musical Doodles - 11.22.2025

The first Musical Doodles session of Season 4 is inspired by the painting ‘Rock Pond’ by artist Helen Frankenthaler, which is currently on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Abstract color pools gently suggest forms like water, rocks, and reflections. Just like music, this work of art invites many different interpretations - movement and stillness, surface and depth, light and dark, quiet and loud. Frankenthaler’s work is paired with music by J.S. Bach for this session, and little ones will have the opportunity to listen and create their own visual interpretation of Bach’s music, inspired by Frankelthaler’s abstract use of colors and shapes.

Thanks to everyone who popped in on such a beautiful Saturday for some music and art!

What is “Musical Doodles” ?
Musical Doodles is an interactive experience that encourages active listening and creative thinking. Each musical selection is introduced with a short description of the piece that highlights a certain topic or overarching theme, serving as a drawing prompt. By providing kids with something to listen for, they can begin to develop critical listening skills and enjoy a creative activity while becoming familiar with classical music.
This demonstrates that children have the ability to understand and interpret classical music. With the help of this activity, they can form a connection with classical music, hopefully ensuring that it continues to be a part of their lives in the future.
